The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) is currently showing Have Many Dumb Fights Against Rock by Christine Sun Kim as part of 2026 MMCA x LG OLED. MMCA x LG OLED is a joint project that singles out one artist to present a newly-commissioned site-specific work in Seoul Box at MMCA Seoul.

Christine Sun Kim's piece combines large-scale digital animation together with concomitant mural works through which Kim imaginatively continues her inquiry into the nature of modern language and communication. Her fascination with the complexities of how discourse is conducted in an era of increased digital connectivity here evokes cycles of conflict and unproductive argumentation that have become a hallmark of the current digital ecosystem.

In Kim's view, the polarization of discourse among different political and social groups has become intensified by online media, which, in the artist's imagination, is no different than “arguing endlessly with a rock”. Instead of “rock” being just a signifier for an intransigent other opposed to us in this discourse, it also self-critically points a finger at all of us for our inability to compromise and for being trammeled by our own certainties.
