# M+ Museum launches first Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival

M+ Museum in Hong Kong recently launched the inaugural edition of the [Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival](https://aagff.mplus.org.hk/?ref=kinoki.co). Presented with the theme "Encounter the Unexpected!", the festival offers a variety of independent moving image practices which have emerged outside of the limits of mainstream film industry. Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival is organized by [M+ Museum](https://www.mplus.org.hk/en/cinema/asian-avant-garde-film-festival/?ref=kinoki.co) with the support of luxury fashion house Chanel.

The four-day event features screenings, exhibitions, performances, talks and workshops. More than 20 guest artists have been invited to present their latest works, in addition to [a retrospective look](https://www.thepeakmagazine.com.sg/events/mhong-kong-chanel-inaugural-asian-film-festival/?ref=kinoki.co) at film artists and video artists whose works have blazed the trail for newer generations. The festival opened on May 30th with *Phantom Frequencies: An Audiovisual Experience* by Wing Shya x nnscya, an innovative video installation which redefines the potentialities of film photography in the digital age.

With this festival M+ Museum, Asia's first global museum of contemporary art, is providing its own unique take on the abundant past of avant-garde filmmaking, which spans over six decades on the continent. [Wing Shya](http://www.wingshya.com/?ref=kinoki.co), a renowned photographer, designer and filmmaker from Hong Kong, is serving as the festival's artistic director.
