# Wael Shawky has a film about Pompeii showing at Palazzo Grimani

The Egyptian artist Wael Shawky is holding an exhibition of his most recent cinematic work at [Palazzo Grimani](https://polomusealeveneto.beniculturali.it/eventi-e-mostre/wael-shawky%C2%A0%C2%A0i-am-hymns-new-temples-%D8%A3%D9%86%D8%A7-%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA%DB%8C%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D8%AF%DB%8C%D8%AF%D8%A9-di-wael-shawky-museo?ref=kinoki.co) in Venice as part of the 60th Venice Biennale. The film, titled *I Am Hymns of the New Temples*, was conceived by the artist in 2023 when he was [invited](https://pompeiicommitment.org/en/collectio/wael-shawky-i-am-hymns-of-the-new-temples/?ref=kinoki.co) by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii to contribute to its initiative of creating a long-term programme of contemporary art, with the intent of linking the park with the theme of cultural heritage.

During its heyday, Pompeii was a vibrant trade site, a nexus where the different cultures that had been incorporated into the Roman state coalesced in one spot. Shawky found this to be a fitting stage for this intricate play of intertwining narratives, with his actors and actresses donning [masks of ceramic](https://liarumma.com/exhibitions/i-am-hymns-of-the-new-temples?ref=kinoki.co) and papier mâché that portray gods and goddesses, men and women, caught up in ritualistic dances reminiscent of the ancient pagan mysteries. 

[Shawky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wael%5FShawky?ref=kinoki.co) creates in a variety of media, such as film, drawing, painting, sculpture and theater. The main thrust of his artistic work has been on confronting notions of national, religious and artistic identity.
