What characteristics define Smith's artistic practice?
Two concepts are central to Smith's art: experimentation and non-linearity. These concepts are reflected in her utilization of a variety of media to convey her message. Having manifested a longstanding intellectual focus on issues of Black cinema, Afrofuturism, Black feminism, Afrocentric aesthetics and Third World Cinema since her student days, Smith engages these topics with an inquisitive eye that continuously inquires into the histories of Black gathering and retreat.

Smith's films, video installations and sculptures acquire depth through her deft application of epic soundscapes, grandiose design solutions, judicious use of lighting and a refined editing style. Meaning subtly peeks through layered references that are brimming with questions about identity and acceptance, driven by a research-based approach that emphasizes the enduring bond between placemaking and world-building. Smith encourages her viewers to contemplate these questions outside of their usual framework of tension and conflict, instead pointing towards a future bereft of false dichotomies.
