The exhibition Scrapbooks: Inside the Imagination of Filmmakers, at the Espace Van Gogh in Arles, France, explores the intersection of cinema and photography. This exhibition showcases the personal scrapbooks of renowned filmmakers such as: Agnès Varda, Chris Marker, Stan Brakhage, Derek Jarman and others. These scrapbooks reveal the creative process of these artists, their influences, inspirations and visions.

The exhibition is curated by Matthieu Orléan, a film critic and curator at the Cinémathèque Française. He received the 2021 Curatorial Research Grant from the Rencontres d'Arles, a prestigious international photography festival that takes place every summer in Arles since 1970. The grant supports innovative projects that explore the relationship between photography and other artistic disciplines.

The exhibition is part of the 2023 edition of the Rencontres d'Arles, which runs from July 3 to September 24 under the theme A State of Consciousness. The festival features more than 40 exhibitions in various venues across the city, as well as screenings, workshops, debates and awards. The festival attracts more than 200,000 visitors every year and is considered one of the most important events for photography.
