The exhibition Scrapbooks: Inside the Imagination of Filmmakers, at the Espace Van Gogh in Arles, France, explores the intersection of cinema and photography. This exhibition showcases the personal scrapbooks of renowned filmmakers such as: Agnès Varda, Chris Marker, Stan Brakhage, Derek Jarman and others. These scrapbooks reveal the creative process of these artists, their influences, inspirations and visions.
The exhibition is curated by Matthieu Orléan, a film critic and curator at the Cinémathèque Française. He received the 2021 Curatorial Research Grant from the Rencontres d'Arles, a prestigious international photography festival that takes place every summer in Arles since 1970. The grant supports innovative projects that explore the relationship between photography and other artistic disciplines.
