What is Fondazione In Between Art Film?

Fondazione In Between Art Film is a non-profit organization based in Rome that was established in 2019 by Beatrice Bulgari with the goal of providing support for the development and curation of time-based media. Fondazione In Between Art Film is dedicated to investigating the boundaries of film and art through a variety of public actions that include commissioned projects, institutional collaborations and acquisition programmes.

What is the mission of the Fondazione?

Fondazione In Between Art Film continues the legacy of the production company In Between Art Film which, during the period 2012-2019, produced video works that were screened at different venues and events, from dOCUMENTA 14 in Kassel, Manifesta 12 in Palermo to the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement in Geneva in 2016 and 2018. The Fondazione's president, Beatrice Bulgari, who had worked as a costume designer in cinema for years, was piqued by a question that emerged during a collaboration she had with the great Italian director Ermanno Olmi on a cross-disciplinary documentary: Was creativity limited by those creative disciplines which have long existed or was it possible for artistic practices to converge and pave a way for new forms of expression?

During the course of her extensive work in cinema, Beatrice Bulgari familiarized herself with the many issues that aspiring and established artists encounter when developing a project. By fostering a personal relationship with the artists, Bulgari and her team, consisting of artistic director Alessandro Rabottini and curators Leonardo Bigazzi and Paolo Ugolini, then consider their projects from several different angles and assist them in conceiving new works. This, then, enables the artists to engage in new discursive and editorial practices, thereby expanding the impact of their creations.

By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the creative vision, motivations and artistic processes that inform each artist, the Fondazione is committed to providing effective support, guidance and feedback that facilitates the achievement of their goals. It is likewise dedicated to exploring the dialogue between disciplines, supporting artists, institutions and research organizations, firmly ensconced within a context that is international in scope.

What projects and artists has Fondazione In Between Art Film supported?

Since its inception in 2019, Fondazione In Between Art Film has collaborated with a multitude of moving image artists to assist them in realizing their artistic visions by providing the necessary funding and production logistics. With a heightened awareness of the resource demands that burden the creation of every film, video and digital creation – as well as the lesser value placed on moving image art on the art scene – the Fondazione has been able to leverage its expertise, curatorial know-how and detailed comprehension of the medium to increase its presence at major art festivals and institutional exhibitions.

The Fondazione has participated in the co-production and commissioning of works by artists and collectives such as Rosa Barba, Masbedo, Saodat Ismailova, Ana Vaz, Karimah Ashadu and many others. It has initiated two projects: Mascarilla 19 and Corto Arte Circuito. Mascarilla 19 is a project consisting of eight artists’ films commissioned and produced by the Fondazione; initiated during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the overarching theme of the project deals with the increase in domestic violence against women during those trying times. Corto Arte Circuito was a non-profit organization that was active between 2007 and 2012; conceived by Beatrice Bulgari, its main aim was to produce and promote short films made by Italian and international artists who documented the creative process of other visual artists.

What exhibitions has Fondazione In Between Art Film organized so far?

Fondazione's activities extend beyond the production and commissioning of moving image art to its promotion at major art festivals and institutions. It has organized six solo and group exhibitions: Penumbra, Dreamless Night, Nebula, Lantern With No Walls, Tendered and Canicula

Nebula was the second in a series of group exhibitions organized by Fondazione. It was held at the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto during the 60th Venice Biennale, where works by eight artists were displayed. Inspired by the obscure nature of socio-political, psychological, historical and technological fragmentation permeating our current reality, the artists addressed modes of navigating this turbid mental landscape by providing different sensorial tools to disperse the ambiguity arising from this fragmentation.

Tendered was the second in a series of projects launched through Fondazione's “Unison” biennial initiative through which it commissions and produces moving image-based exhibitions. Consisting of a solo exhibition of works by the award-winning British-Nigerian filmmaker Karimah Ashadu at the Camden Art Centre in London held from October 2026 to March 2026, it debuted Ashadu's latest installation piece MUSCLE (2025), an intimate portrait of the lives and ideals of body builders in Lagos’ slums.

The Fondazione's most recent project is Canicula, the third in a series of shows presented during the Venice Biennale.
