Who is Refik Anadol?
Refik Anadol is a Turkish-American visual artist whose pioneering work in the aesthetics of data visualization and AI have given him critical acclaim in the international art community. Born and raised in Istanbul by a family of teachers, Anadol nurtured an early fascination with computer technologies and futurism. He attended Istanbul Bilgi University and acquired a BA in photography and video in 2009, and a MFA in visual communication in 2011. He finished an MFA in design media arts at UCLA in 2014 under the tutelage of Casey Reas, Jennifer Steinkamp, and Christian Moeller. He is currently based in Los Angeles.
What are some defining characteristics of Anadol's art?
The primary driving force behind Refik Anadol's creative approach is the invisible and intangible world of publicly accessible data. Tracking a course back to his first encounters with basic programming on a Commodore 64 at the age of 8 and with machine memories from watching Blade Runner, the loci of the artist's work revolve around the intersection of human and machine. He approaches the question of memory and data processing from a radical perspective, extracting the primary material for his creations from data originating from our surroundings. This, then, serves as the input which is processed through the neural network of a computerized mind, which transforms it into unforeseen forms, into digitized memories that reveal a vast expanse of potentialities for the interdisciplinary arts.
Anadol's inspired usage of generative artificial intelligence uncovers the deepest recesses of the human mind through an oneiric process of transmogrification, which tears asunder the gauzy veil that separates reality from the infinite domain of dreams. His works take the form of AI data paintings and sculptures, live audio/visual performances and immersive installations which nudge viewers to reimagine their understanding of the physical world, public art, decentralized networks, and to unlock the creative potential that is hidden in AI. Through his creative projects, Anadol casts a light on the results of human-machine collaboration, how we perceive time and space in an era dominated by technology, humanity's relationship to nature and on whether the empirical data gathered through the senses is certain.
