In its third exhibition, the young New York City art space SMILERS is examining the mechanisms that underpin the proliferation of conspiracy theories with REPORT FROM NORI MOUNTAIN. The show takes its concept from the 1960s satirical novel The Report from Iron Mountain, written by Leonard C. Lewin and Victor Navasky.
The curators at SMILERS sent out “transmissions,” consisting of an emoji-laden prompt, asking the group of artists participating in this project to respond to the call. Supplemented by a few sentences from the curators that only marginally clarified the call, the artists then embarked on a wild journey to penetrate through the veil of static to decipher the message. The resulting interpretations of these transmission are playful and subversive, poking fun at the many ways that The Report from Iron Mountain has been decontextualized over the decades.
In its previous two shows earlier this year, SMILERS explored the legacy of the New York City club scene and creative videogames. Participating artists included Cory Arcangel, Lizzi Bougatsos and others. SMILERS is operated by former Pace curator Mark Beasley and artist Laura Tighe.
REPORT FROM NORI MOUNTAIN will feature the work of an international group of artists, including: Auriea Harvey, Igor Simic, Jenna Beasley and others. The show is scheduled to open on May 29, 2025 at the East Village space. More information can be found at the SMILERS site.
